I Samuel 1:13,14

13 Hannah was praying in her heart, and her lips were moving but her voice was not heard. Eli thought she was drunk

14 and said to her, “How long are you going to stay drunk? Put away your wine.

Hannah was one of the two wives of Elkanah, the other being Peninnah. While Peninnah had children, Hannah remained childless, which led Peninnah to provoke her relentlessly, causing her great distress, as the Lord had closed Hannah's womb. This situation brought Hannah deep sorrow, leading her to weep and refrain from eating. In her anguish, she resolved to visit the temple to pray to God for assistance. As she prayed and wept, fully aware that God could help her in her dire situation, Hannah silently moved her lips in prayer, though her voice was inaudible. Eli, the priest and servant of God who acted as an intermediary between the congregation and the Lord, misinterpreted her actions and assumed she was intoxicated. He admonished her, saying, "How long will you be drunk? Put away your wine." This remark was likely humiliating for Hannah and could have discouraged her from continuing her prayers.

Although Eli failed to comprehend her plight, Hannah was confident that God understood her heart. She replied to Eli, "No, my lord, I am a woman deeply troubled in spirit. I have not consumed wine or strong drink; rather, I am pouring out my soul before the Lord. Do not consider your servant a worthless woman, for I have been speaking out of my great anguish and grief." Hannah did not allow Eli's words to deter her faith or her relationship with God. Regardless of Eli's position or authority, she maintained her trust in the Lord, knowing that He alone could truly understand her and provide deliverance. Ultimately, the Lord, who recognized her pain, granted her request, and Hannah became pregnant, giving birth to a son. Praise God!

It is possible that the challenges you encounter appear insurmountable, and you may feel isolated in your struggles, or you might be subjected to words that cause distress or humiliation. However, do not lose hope or succumb to despair. Continue to seek God and place your faith in Him. He is the God who comprehends your situation and can free you from your difficulties and feelings of shame.

Amen.
